Muslims but still a thug
When you look at the ummah today it is filled with no good, low down, men. I can not speak for all Muslim men I can just tell you what I see. when I look at Philly. Man i am happy I am not there. Yes, it is a place you can be Muslim freely. You can not turn a corner without see a sister in hijab or a brother sporting a beard, kufie, or a thobe. You get salaamed all day if your out long enough. HOWEVER, these Muslims were yesterdays pimps, drug dealers and thugs. NOT ALL so please do not bite my head off. BUT the truth is MOSt of them, the men, have spent time in jail. Yes, Islam can help you turn your life around. a perfect example of that is Malcolm X. He spent time in jail and was introduced to a form of Islam while there. He came out of jail a changed man. BUT that is not what is happening today. Today we see Muslim men with thug mentalities. To me that is a scary thought……….If it does not scare you please do not read any further. This post is NOT for you!
These men are coming out of jail Muslim but they have not changed. They are just finding ways to do the same things they did before but in a “HALAL” manner. They still want to be a pimp, thug, and drug dealer; but they are selling and doing these things to Muslims now.
These men are still pimpin women. They will marry 3, 4 women with kids and live off them. They will not have a job and live off these women. All while bragging ” I GOT 4 KEYS!!” some one needs to say so what you have 4 keys but no job! You are not a real man! This is NOT ISLAM! These men will live in 4 section 8 apartments and not pay one bill. THis man is the man we will defend and not tell anyone when he beats his wives and mistreats her daughters. This is the man we call brother so and so and shun his wives. We do this because we expect those actions from him because he is doing what a pimp dose. We have come to expect the Muslim with the thug mentality.
These man are also the men that oppress their wives. These women will have no freedom. He will lock her in the house ; allowing her to only go out to collect her money, food stamps and shop for the family. He will not allow her to have any friends, see her family because she has to wait on him hand and foot. He will tell her she can not show her face, or speak outside, no one can hear her voice or her footsteps and shout Islamic hadith to back him up. This man will jump on her every move and tell her she is not making him happy and happily remind her that HE is her path to jennah. This is another example of a Muslim man with the Thug mentality.
A friend of mine has a ex husband. Her husband broke this new wife down so much she allowed him to marry of her her eight yr old daughter. He met this woman a week after she took shaddah and brainwashed her with all kinds of hislam. This is the preditor thug. this little girl had a period one month and was married the next. He not only married her off but sent her to Egypt with her new husband and other wife. This baby is now a divorce woman at 9. The 36 year old man sent her back to her mother telling her the girl was too young……….OH IT TOOK HIM 1 yr to know a eight yr old was too young. I sorry I smell a rat. It seems to me like this man only wanted to be with a little girl and not she is looking too much like a woman for him. and he used her up and sent her back. HOW SICK!!!!!!!!!!!
I am so sorry to say that men do not have the monopoly on this trait. Women act just as ghetto. I am shocked when I see or read women acting like a nut. I wish I could say only men act like a thug so I will call these women ghetto.
I read a post the other day. It made me sick to the stomach. This woman was asking about moving overseas to the land of Muslims. She was from Philly. She asked the normal question..like how expensive is it, what type of lifestyle can she expect and do they treat blkpeople ok, then she went on to say. can a man with 2 wives no of whom have a high school education make it, can a man support these 2 wives and i think 5 kids with no job but only a hustle, and then the kicker… she said they were getting government checks that they want to live on while they are here!!!!!……do they do background checks cause you know all of us have been in trouble from time to time. a black man in the state will get lock up for just standing on the corner…….Oh and by the way is it like America guilty until proven otherwise. also it is the dream of my husband to have an arab wife will he as a black man have a hard time finding an Arab wife?

Ok I know people get caught up and do not finish school. but why is it that it is not important to do it later. there is such a thing as a GED! it does and will open doors. Why is it that all 3 of them have no education AND NO JOB!! why does this man with NO JOB have 2 wives????
They want to come here and live off money from another government. Not only is that wrong and ghetto but it is illegal. YOU can not get a welfare check and move oversea and take money out the ATM in UAE and live off it.
Usually people that stand on corners in Philly need to be in jail so why is she acting like there are in the right and if they get locked up it is not their fault. why is this women wanting to pawn her husband off on another women? Why is she wanting to give her misery to another woman? This man has no job. HE can not Islamicly get another wife . HE can not afford to feed her. why do they think they can bring their philly flavor to another country and act up? Get his hustle on. what hastle………oh yeah he hussles his wives into taking care of him while he collects wives from other countries??????
But again, this is just an example of how we get brainwashed into thinking these men are our savious and path to jennah. We get dooped into thinking we have to serve and obey or we are the ones that will go to hell. The one thing men have done a good job at is scaring women into thinking they are less than nothing. and that we need them for everything. To listen to some women I wonder how they even manage to wake up in the morning with out a husband.
This is what a pimp does. He swoops in makes you fall in love with him. He allows you to see all his faults but think they are not important cause he NEEDS YOU! You know he has no job, no money, no place to live and no education. But you still want him. YOU know he will want another woman or already has several but you still want him. He does not hide anything from you and you still want him. you will gladly give him your love, all your power and pledge to him your life. Because he is your way to jennah. he is goign to help you complete your deen. He is goign to give you what you need………this is of course what is required of a good Muslim woman. Then he will make you give him YOUR MONEY. YOu do all the work and he gets all the glory and the nice lifestyle. YOU serve him and pay him for that privilege. Then when you are not as special as you were when he got you; he will have you willingly go out and recruit new troops. He is the Halal Pimp.
Now, please dont get me wrong; I believes there are some good Muslims that came out of jail. I think there are good Muslims living in Philly. MY family is there so I cant give up on the place. I am also not saying these things only happen in Philly. They are happening all over the world. Not all pimps come from jail. They have pimps here in UAE and I saw them in EGYPT. I see these Arab men marry Western women and make them work. Now they would never dream of having their Arab wife lift a finger. Most times they are stay at home wives; But he will pimp the convert wife. She will work and not only support herself but give him money as well. ALL so she can say she is married to an Arab……what a lucky girl!!!! So these thungs are all over. These men will mentally abuse you and make you feel like you are the one in the wrong when you question them. They will tell you how dare you question them. He is the man….he has been Muslim his whole life and he knows Islam you do know anything. He will tell you his OTHER wife never questions him. He will make you THINK you need him.
This is not Islam but this is what we have in Islam. We need to find ways to change this. We need to start acting like Muslims and not just dressing like ones. We need to care about what goes on behind closed doors and not just about what people see out side. Islam is a way of life. Islam should change your thinking and your actions for the better, not just the way you dress and look. It should not only change your speach with the englabish (english and arabic words mixed together) It should change what you say. You should be kinder, more loving, and positive. So the next time you think your folling someone; Remember , ALLAh knows what you do in secret. Think about that the next time you think your fooling someone.
It takes two to tango and i blame the women more because we should be more responsible and WISE when choosing a partner, at the end of the day we are the ones who would be left to raise the children and those women subject their children to different stepfathers. Rather than taking their time to know a partner, his family, past, education/profession, whether they are compatibe or not, they ask “where is allah” “can you teach me the deen?”. This pretentious culture and imitating the Saudis without acknowledging their problems is part of the problem. Both sexes are fooling each other.

Well sis, a lot of what you say is true. However, this mentality is rampant in Philly and not only among the Muslim population. Like you said, some merely take advantage of the deen to be a halal this-or-that.
Kaliimaat: why is the woman always held to a higher level of accountibility? What you say has a good foundation, but the truth is that this doesn’t work for certain people. Some people have not had good models for life. Some never learn, some learn too late.
Your right Safiyyah, It is not just the Muslims that act this way. BUT the point of the post is that we as muslims should not STILL act like a thug. No change doesnot happen overnite but we should we should at least try to change our wants and live a life more Islamic.
How a man can pray 5x a day and go home and mistreat his wife is amazing to me. How a man that prays and does his sunnahs as well can lie cheat and decieve everyday …….is beyond me. Blaming the woman is not reaaly goign to fly with me. IF in ISLAM the man is suppose to be your way to jennah, If he is suppose to be your protector and maintainer then it is HE that has the higher level of accountibility. Not the woman. If the brother that wants to marry her is untruthful, the imams/wali is not being honest, his friends lie for him…..who can she trust and who can she believe. This is a really interesting post with a lot of food for thought. It brought one question to mind for me, though. Why do you think Islam is so appealing in the prison compared to other religions — or is that not the case. I would be curious to see some stats and if there is any correlation between what is perceived as a Muslim woman’s subservient behavior and the rates of conversion and subsequent marriage in the Muslim community.
I’m pretty tired of blaming the woman to a greater degree than the man. It seems like that is just a continuation of the misogyny that has characterized humanity over such a long period of time. We bear a degree of responsibility but I would not say greater responsibility than the lwocked men who use and abuse women and do it in teh name of Islam.

I do not think it is more appealing becasue there are still way more christians than Muslims in Jail. I think there just happens to be a HUGE number of BAM(Black American Muslims) In Philly vs other places.
The thug mentality is not just in the muslim community it is a all over philly thing. NOT all people that come from philly are thugs and ghetto. NOT AT ALL!! I have many friends and family members there.however, the crime rate in philly is off the chart and like I said when you read about the man dressed in niqab to rob folks and end up killing a police officer. you have to stop and think about the direction that city is going.

I work in the PA system as a chaplain, with women, many from Philadelphia.
There are more Christians in prison than Muslims, this is true. But more inmates convert to Islam while in prison compared to those who convert to Christianity. Yet, there are those Christians who turn into Jesus freaks while in prison but don’t fare any better upon release than the Muslims.
In the US, I think that many inmates are born into Christianity, so they convert to Islam because they are searching, looking for something different. Likewise, there are BAM from Philly that have converted to Judaism. Is it like running from oneself – to something else. Instead of standing still, looking at oneself, trying to improve.
It’s like the alcoholic who gets a DUI. Instead of quitting drinking, he quits driving.
Also, Islam offers a strong sense of belonging. This attracts inmates who often are in desperate need of belonging.
Also, many inmates meet a Muslim for the first time while incarcerated. They may be cellmates with a Muslim. They see this Muslim praying 5 times a day, being disciplined, etc. This is attractive and therefore an inmates want it too and will convert.
Then are the Muslims, mostly Salafi, in prison who give strong dawah.
And then there are those Muslim thugs who come to prison as a thug and the others, who have gang mentality, are attracted to them and convert, another belonging dynamic.
You are right that the thug mentality is all over Philly. That is what I was saying in my first comment. Many Muslims in the streets of Philly are no different than the rest of them.
So, for the strong Muslim in prison – what happens when she gets out? Who is there to support her? The thug sisters? Or the ones who convince her to be a co-wife? etc. etc. Or the brothers who swoop down on these sisters when they first get released?
Many of the incarcerated sisters already have thug Muslim husbands waiting for them when they get home. Also waiting for her upon release is a new co-wife…or two.
See what I’m talking about? It’s ugly.
Its not about blaming women, but facing reality, we cannot compare ourselves to men who never had to shoulder responsibility except for themselves, however most of us are responsible for children and thus should be in a position where we think very carefully about our choices of men. In an ideal society we would like that men have a life changing transformation after they take their shahada, but let us be real. So the sister who marries unemployed guy and complains he is a bum should take responsibility, if a sister marries a man who does not see or support his children from previous relationships, then she should take responsibility for her bad choice .
Its no use for women to pretend they are victims, rather its better to learn from their mistakes and not put all the blame on men for our bad choices.

A man that has been useing women his whole life. He never had one woman but with the several girlfriends comes drama. Then he hears he can have not 1 , not 2 not even 3 but 4 woman and the woman wont bit** about having to share him. they tell them the women will do it becuase they are their key to jennah. Then to top it off the women have to obey him and serve him and he is ” the man” ……MAN PLEASE a man would just love it.

Great post, LLLI! I think everyone has made great comments. Philly’s urban culture is cancerous and through prison conversions and polygyny it has become a cancer upon the Muslims there. I think though I expect more of the women. We can do better, there are more than enough of us to make positive changes for our children but we don’t. Like LLLI said sisters, especially the ghetto fabolous – ride & die munaqabah are ready to bash other sisters up side their heads for even thinking about questioning something any of their duaat say or rule on. And Lord Allah, don’t let Shaykh Rabee (ha) issue a statement on any marriage issues, IT IS GOSPEL, for them. The brothers there are in a position to abuse and they know. If the issue is with former prisoners straying from the righteous path, please implore your imam to go to the institutions to assist those men (women) in how to be a part of the rightly guided. Allow them a better understanding of applying laws also address in the hadiths, Allah willing, maybe they will become better servants of Allah, the deen (community), themselves and their partner(s).
